1.) The most moving aspect of the instrumental piece is the slow melodic build up of tones and the emotion that the instruments create. The violins stick out the most to me.

What stands out to me in the choral piece is the slow transition between the notes being sung.
3.)The Choral one resonates with me the most because of how peaceful and at the same time how sad it is.
4.)What stands out the most between the two is the forcefulness the piece makes. The choral version seems less pressuring on the listener where as the intrumental version seems to be rough and forceful to the listener.
5.)What we can take from the choral version is the idea of an insperation to be better and use the piece as a motivational tool.
1. The instrumental version is very powerful with the strength of the string instrumentalists really reflecting the beauty of the piece. I’ve never heard the instrumental version, but I have heard Agnus Dei before. What surprised me the most was how amazingly strong the violins were! There was a certain sound to them that engulfed me an emotion.
ReplyDelete2. Adagio for Strings has a very nostalgic affect on me. The first time I heard Agnus Dei was in my childhood way back when I was six or seven years old. I played a game called Homeworld and its sequel Homeworld 2 (cliché I know) this song as its main theme and introduction. It’s powerful storyline and musical score has stuck with me every since. That game and Adagio for Strings helped spur me into being a story-writer!
3. Agnus Dei’s performs of Adagio for Strings hits me the hardest because it fills me with an innumerable amount of good memories. Like I mentioned above, Adagio for Strings helped spur me into being a story-writer and I’m not sure I’d be so into writing without it.
4. The instrumental version has more power, however Agnus Dei has more of an emotional affect.
5. You can really hear the blend of voices in the choral version and it’s very crucial that we do the same. Their blend has the effect of making them sound like single but separate voices at the same time.
1) the most powerful and moving aspect of the instrumental version is the deep tones that the stringed instruments offer. The part that stands out the most to me is the visual expression of passion that the conductor evokes.
ReplyDelete2) The most powerful and moving aspect of the voices is the blending of each voice along with a certain distinguishable aspect of the different tones that registers on a higher level then the stringed instruments. The part that stood out the most to me was the the layering of each section of voices and then denouement where each of the voices crescendo-ed.
3) The Choral group resonates with me the most because of the heft that the voices carry with them. There is more substance to the voices then there is to the stringed instruments. The voices are less mechanical then the instruments in a good way; the tone of the voices flows in a curved line. Whereas, the instruments are leaning more toward a straight lined tone.
4)The biggest difference between instrumental and choral music, like previously stated in #3, is the flow of the music. Choral music has the potential to flow in more of a curved line then instrumental music can.
5) The one aspect of the piece we listened to that I think we should take a way from it is the crescendo-ing of the voices, that finish with such a pure sound. The most realistic thing to take away from this is the tallness of the voices.
1) I would most definitely say that the violins were the most powerful and moving aspect of the instrumental version. What stands out to me the most is the audience interest in the song and how their faces look very serious. Also the passion that the people playing the instruments have make the music even better.

4) The instrumental version was totally louder and not as peaceful as the choral version. Also the instrumental version sounded like it was being rushed and the choral was nice and slow.
5) The things that we can take to our choral group from these videos is that we need to blend our voices together with better sound and a more pure sound.
1.)the most powerful aspect of the intrumental version of this song is the beautiful and strong sound of the violins. the serious and deication of the musicians sticks out to me the most because you can tell that they are very passionate and dedicated to their music.
ReplyDelete2.)what stands out to me the most is the fluent bledning of the voices. one can tell that they have worked very hard on accomplishing this astonishing sound and that the different pitches are all sung well.
3.)the choral version resonates with me the most because the voices have such a fluent continuous sound that really i like because it is so soft and peaceful,but yet you can feel the emotions in the song.
4.) The biggest difference to me between the two is just the sound is completely different. The instrumental version is done very well but is not as realxing and smooth as the choral version is. i just like how smooth the choral version is.
5.)I think that we can try and make our sound blend more. we are still learning how to do this but if we can make our sound more flowing and continuous it will sound much better. we need not to make our sound seem like were trying to sing but that we are singing and its soft and strong at the same time.
1.) The core sound in general was the most powerful and moving aspect. All of the stringed instruments had a unique yet powerful sound they displayed. They all offered different things to the peice.

3.) The ochestra version resonates with me the most. I was expecting to be bored while listening to the peice. I was blown away with the sound. The music was beautiful. I also appreciated how the conduct was emotionally tied to the peice.
4.) The sound. It felt like to me the instruments gave off a louder and prettier sound. The choral performance was nice to listen to but in my opinion the string instruments hands down were better.
5.) I think we should try to project ourselves more. If we combine that with good diction and vowels we will be a really good choir.
1) The most powerful part of the instrumental version is the violins and the conductor. The strings really resound in pristine, crystal clear sound-it was absolutely jawdropping when it came a crescendo and then a sudden stop. The conductor really looked as if he was directly affected by the music. It was wonderful.
ReplyDelete2) The best part of the choral piece is how unified and affluent their voices are. It is a perfect combination of sound inflection, emotion, control, clarity, focus, and attention.
3) I liked the vocal piece more because of it's stunning, clear, and splendid tone. It made my ears happy-and that's the goal of all music. To inflict emotion. That is art anyway.
4) The biggest difference between the two was in the way the emotion was conveyed. Unlike the instrumental piece, the choral music has this real, aesthetic, heartfelt kind of feel to it that the instrumental piece just can't convey.
5) I think that as a choir we can learn from these pieces; by using the exactness of the choral piece and the harmonics of the choral piece. Especially on tollite hostias. These techniques could make that piece extraordinary.
1) The beginning really brings your attention in and throughout the song it gets better and better. All of the different instruments blended together makes it sound great! The violins in the instrumental stand out the most, and i also think they set the mood for the song as well.
ReplyDelete2) Right off the bat this one to me is better. The voices in this are beautiful. It makes me think of a dark church in a movie; creepy but very beautiful. The girls voices stand out to me the most.
3) The second one because there is actually singing in it. To me I would pick anything with lyrics over an instrumental. It makes anything sound better.
4) The sound as a whole sounds better with voices to me. Both of the peices were great but i think the voices add a more dramatic affect to it almost like a play or a movie.
5) If we can stay on pitch and sing everything right and stay tall we will sound alot better. I think now that more people are trying we are sounding better. Can't wait to see how we sound at the end of the year.
1) The conductor is probably what gives the piece a lot of its power, but I think that hearing songs like this in every sad scene of almost every movie kind of takes some of its power away

4)Instrumental is too bland and it has many limitations. Like you said the human voice ca imitate almost any sound. With choral music there is a lot more you can do with the music.

1)The most powerful aspect of the instrumental group I thought was the deep sound mixing with the high violins. The sound made me think of a choir in that there are a mixture of sounds that come together to make one great sound.
ReplyDelete2)I though the best aspect of the choral group was again the blending of sounds to make one complete sound. It was kind of a darker and beautiful sound. The sound made me think somewhat of the video game halo.
3)I thought that the choral group was better because it seems to me that it would be more of a challenge to blend a bunch of voices to make a sound like they do then to blend a bunch of instruments together.
4)I thought both perfomances were great. I thought the instumental version may have been more powerful but the choral version was an overall more well blended sound.
5)I think to be a better choir we can blend our sounds better together to make a more complete sound and sound more like a men's chorus.
1. the most moving part of the instrumental would have to be the second half of it in general. it was filled with emottion and seemed to have much more power. i also thought the composer and the muscians added a very powerful tone to it all. their movements and emotions showed through the music stuck out as well. what stood out to me the most was that it was so perfect and there were no small mistakes.
ReplyDelete2. i think almost the same has to go for the choral version. it was very interesting to hear the voices. it seemed much smoother and clearer. the same part towards the end moved me when it built up and then stopped all together. what stood out to me the most was how high some of the voices got. i dont know if i like it but it was impressive.
3. i really like the musical version and the choral version. i felt as though both were equal. i think my opinion is this because im not really studied in either category so i just thought both were great.
4. i think the biggest difference in the musical and the choral is the sound obviously. the musical almost felt as though you could hear the strings and the peices in the instruments moving to make the sound. in the choral piece it was stricktly what was meant to be. allot clearer and didnt seem to take away from the music at all.
5. well i really dont know what we can take. i think that what i heard shows what allot of practice and talent can do. i feel as though we can pull both of those together and really try. i think focus and the will to be a greater chorus then we are is what should drive us.
1. The constant movement of the chords draws me in. The smoothness of the transitions between the chords brings out the true tonality of the song. The song flows very well with the slow tempo. The beauty of this song is that nothing stands out, all the instruments are working together to have this one gigantic chord that pulls slowly through the song.
ReplyDelete2. The sustain that the singers posses is what amazes me. The pitch is perfect and they have a slight warmth to their voices given the slow speed of the piece. You can really hear the voices blend together perfectly.
3. I'm a sucker for orchestras. I'd have to go with the instrumental version because the chords are so smoothly played. Not to send any disrespect towards the vocals, they are amazing.
4. The choral music has a brighter tone than the instrumental. The high voices soar over the others where as with the instrumental all the instruments build together more.
5. Blending, blending, and more blending. We need to all open our mouth and lift our soft pallets to get that warmth that the choral singers have so we don't sound as nasally and immature.
1. This is a very moving piece. I think that most moving part of it is the emotion of the music. Its not happy a quick, it is sweet and slow. I heard no errors or any kind in it. They were all well rehearsed for this and did an outstanding job. What i think stands out the most is the blend of sound, I never really could single out 1 instrument.
ReplyDelete2. The choral version is just as outstanding as the instrumental version. Just like with the instrumental version what stands out to me the most is the blend of sound. There were different parts but it all sounded like 1 sound and not different sounds.
3. Both the choral and instrumental version were great. But my favorite was the instrumental version. I liked being able to focus on just the sound of the instruments instead of both the voices and the instruments. But I still very much liked the choir.
4. Besides obvious differences like one being instrumental and the other having voices, the emotion between the 2 pieces were different. The instrumental did have alot of emotion in it but the choir had more emotion since the human voice can do a very wide range of things while a instrument is somewhat limited.
5. The only thing I think we can take from this is being able to blend our sounds together to make 1 sound and not 3 or 4 different sounds. We probably won't ever have as much practice as they did but we can still achieve great things
1. In the instrumental version, the sound is very pure, beautiful ,and you can tell that they are all well practiced and know there par to perfection. The thing that i noticed first was that the violins sounded amazing. I was not aware that one could sound so great. The major aspect was the blending of the differrent types of violins and different note blending together to make a magnificent sound.

5. We can listen to this choral group and here that a voice can really be that clear and beautiful and we can strive to get to that point where we are able ot sound like that. We can also work on the blending of voices which was done masterfully in this piece.
1. This piece is very peaceful, and the thing that stands out most to me is the way that the music is played, it's played with so much emotion. You can tell how much the conductor is putting into this piece. It's a very quite and peaceful piece but very powerful at the same time.

The sound that is made from these people is incredible, they all blend so well it makes it seem like instruments are being played in the background.
3. I think that the choral version resonates with me the most because of how much talent it would take to make someone's voice sound like that. It is almost perfect, I can not pick out any flaw in either piece.
4. The thing that stands out to me the most is perfect sound being made by the voices. It makes the use of instruments obsolete. The sound created here is something that not many people can do and it is most impressive.
5. I think the thing that we can take away from this is how much energy is used in this piece. They aren't screaming but their voices are so distinct and resonating while at the same time are quite and blend so well. They control the tone so well and hold perfect pitch, which is something we need to strive for.

4) the biggest diffrence is the feel you get. instrumental there are so many diffrent instruments giving off sound and in vocal it is more blending that instrumental. its alike but at the same time completely diffrent.

ReplyDelete2.) For the choral version I enjoyed the more than the strings. To me the sound is like a swimming pool. Each wave is has a new meaning. Each tone is another dive to a new depth.
I loved the deep bass and the baritone.
3.)I love listening to the coral music. It is easer for me to dissect the sound in my head and imagine seeing the notes. The only way I can describe it is watching 5 or 6 different WMP each playing a for a different voice range.
4.)Where the strings blended all the parts the choral version split into a rainbow of color and feelings and emotion
5.)Each section has a section to pull up to par. What I have found in the past few blogs is that we have what is talks to be a professional group. The problem is we have mainly raw talent. though true we have a lion leading sheep. We sheep have a lot to work to.

1. I think the most powerful and moving aspect of the instrumental version is the slow violin. It is beautifully played over the cellos. Also, without the room shaking bass from the cellos the violins impact wouldn’t be nearly as great. So it is a combination of the instruments playing together that makes this piece of music beautiful and work well.

Even though the instrumental version has harmonizing instruments, the choral version is more colorful and has more passion. I can really get a sense of sorrow from listening to this version of music.
3. The choral version to me resonates with me the most, both of the pieces are beautiful but, you can feel the passion and intensity in the singer’s voices as they harmonize. It is a truly touching piece of music.
4. The thing that stands out the most is the volume. I believe the instruments are louder than the choral group. Volume doesn’t mean everything though; both pieces of music got the message across beautifully.
5. We can take the singer’s passion and eloquence in our singing and incorporate it into our songs. If we all did this we easily would be a better sounding choir that can reach out and touch the audiences and warm their hearts with our music.
1) The powerful, moving aspect is the sound of the strings getting higher and higher and getting faster and faster until it hit’s the peak then dies down. The changing high pitches of the strings is what stands out the most to me.
ReplyDelete2) The moving aspect is the full voice moving up and down and bravado in such a way that it almost seems like they sound like the string instruments. The loud, really FULL voice of the one part where it seems to get really intense.
3) The choir because I can more or less relate to it more because I understand more about chorus than I do about instrumental in a not so impressive way but still can relate to the chorus because I understand why they sing like that.
4) The difference between them for me is the weakness of the mall voices. They sound very small like they’re hidden somewhere and they can’t get it out because the note is too low for people to hear entirely and the fact that most of their notes are always low but at one point get high but come back down low.
5) We could find a way to have more bravado practice and more practice that tests our confidence in our singing.

ReplyDeleteThe most exciting part of the instrumental would be the exciting build up the exciting finish. Which probably starts at the 2:50 mark and it just increases every time. The violin brought a big aspect if to aspect toward the buildup, because you could hear it the whole time and it was just a strong broad sound.
ReplyDeleteThe best part of the choral part was the way that the chorus came in with a great mellow combination of sound. It was very soothing sound. The second part was the most that stands out to me dealing with instrumental and normal choruses would be the generic sound and it also sounds like to me that instrumentally are usually slow and that chorus are louder with lesser music, but with an instrumental its completely music instruments .Also as an all-male chorus can take from their chorus the pronunciation and a much louder and definition of sound. We have to make our audiences hear all of our vowels and consonants. The thing I didn’t like about the instrumental would be the dramatic buildup that took so long to happen , it was very boring at the beginning until at least past the 6 minute mark

1.)The most moving aspectof this instrumental piece is the build, and the emotion set forth by the piece. It emitts so much strength by such fragile instruments. It is extremely compelling and moving, forcing the listener to feel an emotion.
ReplyDelete2.) The vocal piece is encompassed by an almost hanuting harmony from its participants. It is sung with full force and dispalys the talent of the singers.
3.)The first one, it's strength is awesome. The musician's really seem to give it their all and that effort shines throughout.
4.) The arrangements are almost always different. Of course instruemntals have more room to be percussive and exsplosive, but vocal music has th epower to tell a story and put music into words which is vital in getting the listener to appreciate the music.;

1) The most powerful aspect of the first performance is the subtly passionate violin. It speaks loudly through its softness. The slowly rising tension is something only a great violinist could make happen.
ReplyDelete2) The second piece is very complex. It seems like a soft of truimphant piece. The aspect i like most is the rising and falling. It brings you in a hundred different directions to a thousand destinations.
3) I would have to say that the most powerful performance, in my oppinion, is the choral version of Adagio. Being a singer myself, i find it to be more relative to me. It also seems to me that the first has only the passioon of one man, but the second version has the passion of many many different people. They are all completely different people from completely different backgrounds, but they are all focused entirely on creating beautiful music.
4) I believe that the difference between the two is that the instrumental version is the style of one man, but the second is the vocal talents and styles of a combined group of people. This helps to create a multifaceted performance and really sings out to the listener.
5) I believe that what we should learn from this peice is the art of passion. We are not nearly as passionate about our music as these people. They care deepy for what they are doing and wish to really be great. We should also learn subtlety. Being a group of high school dudes, we are not exactly the most subtle group of people. We are a very loud obnoxous chior. I think we should tone that down.

4. The biggest difference to me is the control of the voices that the choral version shows. the people with unstruments can make a sound, but a voice you can relate to and hear the group come together.
5. I think we could learn to sing as a collective group and not just small individual groups. We need to listen to everyone and then think about what we are singing and connect with the group.

3.Adiago for Strings definently hits me the hardest because of how it leaves so much to the imagination. the song is trully emotion in sound and music form.

ReplyDelete2. Something about the sound of a humans voice as compared to an instrument is what really made the vocal version more intense to me. the climax of the song when all the voices are at there loudest and most beautiful was the best part in my opinion.
3. The Version that resonates with me the mot is the choral version. i think it is this way because i think the sound of a human voice can be much more moving than any instrument can be.

1) The most moving aspect of the instrumental piece was that each player was in sync with the director. Each member of the orchestra was moving towards a common goal of producing music of unparalleled beauty and grace. The fact that this piece was performed on the Last Night of the Proms a few days after September 11, 2001 was even more emotionally unsettling.
ReplyDelete2) It is amazing how the human voice can imitate sounds. The power of vocal music is incredible. At first, I thought that I was listening to the instrumental version again. Just the fact that a group of human beings are capable of producing such a gorgeous sound is beyond me.
3) The version that resonated with me the most was the instrumental version because, as an instrumentalist, I can connect on a personal level with each of the musicians. I understand how much suffering, effort, and emotion goes into rehearsals and performances. I can also connect personally with the purpose of the concert, as my uncle was directly affected by the 2001 attacks.
4) Instrumental music and choral music, in my opinion, hardly differ at all. Both are precise. Both are gorgeous, and both are extremely well done. Both types of music require different disciplines and training, but both produce a beautiful sound.
5) The dedication and discipline required to establish a successful men’s chorus is very important and we must imitate this behavior at all times. We must also employ the usage of proper choral techniques such as breathing, vowels, and proper mouth shape.
1) The most powerful moment in the instrumental was the part where the violins started to play the high notes and the conductor stopped them. Then there is the short pause and they slowly start up again. I had this image in my head of a soldier in the middle ages finally coming home only to see his entire village in flames. It really got my eyes watering as the image showed the soldier finding his house in ruins. It was a truly powerful moment as the music picks up after the pause.
ReplyDelete2)The whole choral piece was amazing it reminded me of the Gregorian Chants that I heard when I was up at Saint Meinrad. It was such a beautiful blend of voices. There are no words that can do the singing any justice it was that amazing.It was soft, delicate, and gentle like an innocent child. That is what really got me was the child-like voices. I shuddered after I got done listening to it.
3)It's a tough decision choosing which of the two struck a chord with me but I would have to choose the instrumental piece. It brought out several emotions in me. It felt like I was in the image that was in my head as I listened. At one point I felt like I couldn't breathe. It woke the inner musician in me. Also I have always been an admirer of music rather than choral. It was the combination of small soft notes with the hard sharp notes the the strings that sold it for me. I love the sound of a properly tuned violin.
4)The difference between the choral and the instrumental is that in the instrumental I felt that there was more emotion and passion put in to it. I could see it the way the conductor moved. He was filled with the same mix of emotions that I had felt. There was surges of sound unlike the choral, which sounded soft spoken for the most part.
5)I think that if we cleaned up our vowels and diction and used some of the techniques Mr.Williams showed us to improve our sound and if we pour every fiber of our being into our practice the same way the conductor did but with our voices then I think we could be the best men's choir in the world, if we give it our all.
1)the most powerul part of the instrumental part for me was the violins .they realy stuck out to me ,and the fact that they all managed to stay together threw the entire thing.
ReplyDelete2)i enjoyed this one more then the instrumental one. the entire piece was amazing i enjoyed all of it. i think my church did a version of this.
3)the choral version was the one that will remain with me .
4)the choral and instrumental both were good but the instrumental seemed like it would take more effort.
5)i think if we listened to each other and cleaned up our words and spoke louder we could sound similiar to this group.

4 THe biggest difference was the voices in the choir you heard more, while the instrumental had no sound
5 THe vocal version will teach us how to use our voices better.
